Dirk Nowitzki sent an official notification to the Dallas Mavericks that he is opting out of his contract. He also had to mail a signed copy from Germany before Wednesday’s opt out deadline. Though signed contracts come into play until July 8 negotiations start on Thursday. He’s forfeiting next season’s 21.5 million dollar salary while being eligible to sign a four year deal from the Mavericsk worth a maximum of $96 million. He cannot receive a longer deal because of the over-36 rule. Though Dallas has been trying to convince Dirk to sign an extension to keep him off the open market, him opting out of his contract allows him to take a look into multiple contractual benefits such as a no trae clause ; Kobe Bryant is the only player in the league with an active no trade clause.
