Put yourself in the middle of an intense basketball game for a moment. Your teammate just rebounded the ball and chest passes it to you as you’re making your way to the other end of the court. The defenders beat you to the basket so driving the ball down the lane is out of the question. You look down at your feet to make sure they’re behind the line, look up at the rim and stroke the basket over your defender. Swish! What now?? You turn to the crowd and your teammates to throw up the THREE GOGGLES!!! We have seen so many teams, NBA and NCAA hit a three pointer and put up the three goggles. So, where did it come from and why is it so popular?
Patty Mills noticed that fellow Portland teammate Rudy Fernandez has a problem seeing things far away. He does not need glasses, he just has a problem focusing on objects that are not within a reasonable distance. So, while Fernandez has always thrown up one half of the goggles to signal a three, Mills took it a step further and tossed the sign up on both of his eyes as a way to tease Fernandez. There in lies the creation of the three goggles phenomenon. Now, you will see each member of the Trailblazers put them up consistently.
But, it is not just in Portland. While watching March Madness, I noticed a lot of players putting up their goggles after a three pointer. Coaches may not be too keen on the celebration because they are just focused on making sure their players make it back on the defensive end, so their opposition does not capitalize on the short lived victory. Though it does add another element to many helping how entertaining the game of basketball is becoming.
The “movement” as it is called now has inspired clothing, actual three goggles glasses and even an article in the Wall Street Journal. If you are not familiar with that specific literary piece, it is kind of a big deal. With, the team getting back on track with Brandon Roy and L.A (LaMarcus Aldridge), the most talented player to be shunned by the All Star game, on the court at the same time, the three goggles seems like the first of many phenomenons that the Trailblazers are going to showcase to the world.
