Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway was a rare player, the kind that only comes along every so often. A 6’7 guard out of Memphis University. Nicknamed “Penny”, he was drafted 3rd overall by The Golden State Warriors, and traded to Orlando for Chris Webber; a four time All-Star who once averaged 31-ppg in the 96′- 97′ playoffs.
Penny was the future of the game, and a nightmare match-up, his size was too much for the prototypical point guard; and his dribbles and craftiness got him pass most 2′s and 3′s. Penny’s quicks and hops made him a threat for a highlight finish at any tick.
Big, fast, and versatile he could play the 1,2, or the 3; duke was a beast. Although he only averaged 15.2 for his career, that doesn’t tell his story. If not for injury which tamed his quickness and explosiveness, there is no doubt in my mind that he would have been apart of the next 50 Greatest NBA Players. #1 was making the game look too easy. Anfernee Hardaway and Shaq were taking the league by storm and looking like Magic and Kareem in the process.
Penny was moving the (Blue) Magic in Orlando like Frank Lucus, Denzel and Hov. #1 was straight doping the competition with that Raw Pure Game, Blow n’ by defenders, leaving em leaning. Word on the street was his game was a Ten, and Nike wanted in. Hardaway was on his way to possibly being the “Air Apparent”.
Blessed with exceptional court vision and size like Magic, and with the ability to get to the cup when ever he wanted to like M.J, I bet we all would have loved to see him reach his full potential.

I’ll never forget watching my guy when he was at Memphis State, when he ran a fast break on a dude and alley-ooped it to himself for a tomahawk jam.
He faked the dude out his shoes in the air! This was one of the last people you wanted to see coming at you on a fast break, cuz you could kiss yo ankles goodbye.
Only thing he was missing was Jordan’s killer instinct.
