The most entertaining things about the lockout have not necessarily been the schedule release or the fact that the Christmas day games have officially be announced. Those things are great runner-ups but what has captured NBA fans’ attention the most is undoubtedly all of the hoopla surrounding some of these ridiculous trade rumors.
You know the ones that if you speak up enough, they seem more and more like the truth.
My hat goes off to the Los Angeles Lakers if they are able to land one of the most popular trade rumors to date as they are reportedly aiming to recruit both Chris Paul AND Dwight Howard from the New Orleans Hornets and the Orlando Magic. It would be a hell of a move that would balance the weight that both the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks have stacked their rosters with.
Interestingly enough, New York is also trying to forge a business relationship with the championship-starving guard and at first glance, it seemed as if the Big Apple is where CP3 wanted to land. But, we all know that feelings change in the league like the weather in the Midwest.
Just a little earlier this year, Paul was stating his loyalties to the New Orleans’ franchise and now reports are swirling that he has asked for a trade away from the struggling-to-rebuild organization. Of course you cannot believe everything you hear. But where there is smoke, there is usually fire or at least an inside source telling half of the truth.
Chris Paul’s struggles in New Orleans are apparent. They have continuously failed at adding pieces around the franchise player to increase his chances at a postseason run. A man with as much potential and competitive fire as Paul NO had to understand that they would be on the chopping block sooner than later.
What makes the thought of it all more realistic is that, neither player rumored to be heading to Hollywood appreciates their current home team.
Orlando and Dwight Howard have been on the outs for more than a little while and he has publicly relayed his point on more than on occasion. Can you blame him? That early season trade that brought him Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu and Gilbert Arenas did everything but pay off after a short win streak early on failed to last longer than six or seven bouts.
The postseason was brutal to watch as Howard put up 46 points and 19 rebounds and Orlando still lost to the Atlanta Hawks by 10 points (103-93). Nothing about the Magic is inspiring. Howard realizes that in the Eastern Conference, where teams are beginning to compound all-star lineups, he needs more than a streaky 3-point shooter which more than a few men beside him tend to be.
Every team in the Western Conference needs to face the facts when evaluating whether or not this could truly come to fruition when calculating the financial whiplash it could create. The answer is yes, definitely, absolutely and every other word that could have both of these NBA superstars emerging from a locker room in purple and gold.
The Lakers have the money as they have exhibited by amply going over the allotted cap space year after year. They definitely have the talent already located on their rosters to negotiate.
The franchise is willing to trade anyone with the obvious exception of shooting guard Kobe Bryant, as a trade for him would most likely have to come with billions of dollars, LeBron, Wade, Melo, Durant and the budding Derrick Rose.
The scary thing is if everything goes in the Lakers favor, which it tends to do more times than not (we all saw that Dallas series), the Western Conference would be won before the first game was played out.
The shooting capabilities of Kobe Bryant, the ball movement, agility and court intelligence of Chris Paul and the sheer dominance of Dwight Howard around the rim with the inclusion of his improving free throw percentage would overthrow any dynasty even stretching across to the Eastern Conference in South Beach or NY.
This is the NBA. Expect the unexpected and reject the ordinary. Is it a definite? No. Is it possible? Yes. And if it happened, who would you have taking it all?
